Can you survive five nights?

The cult video game series, Five Nights at Freddy’s,  created by Scott Cawthon, gained a dedicated fanbase for its suspenseful, jump-scare-filled gameplay when it was released in 2014. Several spin-offs followed and have now been turned into a long-awaited feature directed by Emma Tammi and written by Scott Cawthon, Emma Tammi and Seth Cuddebac.

The film stars Josh Hutcherson as the titular character, Mike, a troubled security guard who begins working at Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza. While spending his first night on the job, he realizes that the night shift at Freddy’s won’t be so easy to make it through.

The original game’s objective was to survive for five or more nights by monitoring security cameras, closing doors, and utilizing limited resources to protect oneself from the animatronic characters that came to life at night. The backstory, narrated by the previous nightshift worker’s message on the answering phone, centers on a tragic incident known as the “Bite of ’87,” in which a child was severely injured by one of the animatronics. This event ultimately gave rise to the creation of the sinister “Purple Guy” and the vengeful spirits of the children, which possessed the animatronics.

The film also stars Elizabeth Lail, Piper Rubio, Kat Conner Sterling, Mary Stuart Masterson and Matthew Lillard. The film’s iconic animatronic characters were created by Jim Henson’s Creature Shop and are produced by Jason Blum and Scott Cawthon.

Five Nights at Freddy’s is in theaters and streaming on Peacock October 27.
