Saturday Night Live wasn’t going to miss the chance to do a Barbie parody.
Given the show has been off the air since the writers strike started at the beginning of May, the season 49 opener was its first chance and Lorne Michaels let Pete Davidson fly.
Davidson mocked himself, particularly his show Bupkis and his legal battles with Kanye West during the pastiche of the Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling-fronted toy adaptation.
“What’s Pete going to do? He only has like one character,” says Punkie Johnson before Andrew Dismukes asks, “Why is he hosting again? He just left and it’s not like his show was a hit.”
Bupkis, the Peacock drama that Davidson created and starred in alongside Edie Falco and Joe Pesci, took an early pasting in the parody.
“No one cares about the work I do. I made a show with Joe Pesci too and no one streamed it but my mom,” Davidson sang.
In fact, it turns out if SNL fans want to check it out and don’t have Peacock, NBC is airing a repeat after the show.
Davidson then made a laundry list of his own behavior including buying a Staten Island ferry with Colin Jost, going to rehab when people least expect it and his own BDE and bipolar energy.
“When I’m high, I do things like call up Colin Jost and say maybe we should buy a boat. They tell me I have butthole eyes but I never sleep alone at night. I’m just Pete, anyone else I’d be a three, but I guess I’m hot for dudes in comedy ‘cos it’s an ugly industry. I’m just Pete, looking like a methhead on the street, people online still call me Skete, because of a guy I can’t say legally,” he sang before a photo of Kanye West, the ex-husband of his one-time girlfriend Kim Kardashian, briefly popped on screen.
“My dating life is not discrete, I generate tons of publicity for everything except my comedy,” he added.
The skit, which also looked to feature the first, brief look at new cast member Chloe Troast, who was alongside the likes of Chloe Fineman and Bowen Yang, ends with Davidson driving his Ken-mobile into the Barbie house, mocking his own recent driving skills.
