In a pitstop at the Toronto Film Festival, SAG-AFTRA’s National Executive Director and Chief Negotiator Duncan Crabtree-Ireland revealed that the concert film Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour, which is poised to open to $70M-$100M, has a SAG-AFTRA interim agreement.
Indiewire’s Anne Thompson, who was moderating the discussion, asked Crabtree-Ireland if he should be worried about this newfound success, which is bubbling at the box office.
He had a very polite response:
“Taylor and her team came to us. … The only way she could do it is the right way,” he said. “We’re excited for everyone to go see it.”
As Deadline mentioned, when the AMC-distributed Taylor Swift movie hits theaters on October 13, she’ll be on a tour break. So it wouldn’t be a surprise to see any PR stunts on her behalf when the pic comes out.
Presales for The Eras Tour at the top three circuits are well in excess of $50M at this point, per box office sources. That number has not been made official by AMC.
Many movies have shifted out of the way on the theatrical release calendar seeing the Swift concert film as a Marvel typhoon. One of the big tentpole shifts came from Universal’s reboot The Exorcist: Believer, which was originally scheduled to open on Oct. 13, and now it’s going on Oct. 6.
Today, A24’s wide release of Priscilla moved from Oct. 27 to Nov. 3, which is the “last” weekend of the Taylor Swift concert movie. Last is in quotes because word is out there that theater chains can play it longer.
